WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
1 Niutsuhime Jinja Shinto Shrine
A historic shrine founded over 1,700 years ago, Niutsuhime Shrine is revered as a deity that wards off all misfortunes.
It is also deeply respected as the deity who granted Mount Koya to the great Buddhist master Kukai (Kobo Daishi).
2 Koyasan Kongobuji Temple
Located at the heart of Mount Koya, Kongobu-ji is the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect and oversees all religious affairs of the region.
The temple features beautifully decorated fusuma (sliding doors) adorned with pine trees and cranes, as well as rooms like the "Yanagi-no-Ma" (Willow Room), which showcases elegant paintings of willows and herons.
The temple grounds also house Banryūtei, Japan’s largest rock garden, spanning approximately 2,340 square meters. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll in this serene setting.
3 Danjo Garan
Danjo Garan is the first site that Kukai developed when establishing Mount Koya. Built in 817 with the help of his disciples, its construction took more than a decade.
As a central place of worship, it symbolizes the Womb Realm Mandala, representing the esoteric Buddhist worldview.
4 Koyasan Okunoin Cemetery
Okunoin is one of Mount Koya’s two most sacred sites, along with Danjo Garan.
It is home to the mausoleum of Kukai, who entered nyujo (eternal meditation) here in 853 at the age of 62.
It is believed that he has remained in deep meditation for over 1,200 years.
Visitors often find solace in this deeply spiritual atmosphere, where they can offer prayers of gratitude and reflection, feeling a sense of connection with the revered Buddhist master.
What is the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Mount Koya"?
At an altitude of 800 meters, Mount Koya is a sacred religious city founded by Kukai in 816 as the center of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. It consists of Kongobu-ji Temple, Jison-in Temple (established as an administrative center at the mountain’s base), and several key shrines, including Niukanshobu Shrine, the guardian shrine of Mount Koya’s temple estates.
The most important among them is Niutsuhime Shrine, located in the Amano Basin. It enshrines two deities—Niutsuhime, who granted the land for Kongobu-ji, and Koya Myojin, who guided Kukai to the sacred site. These locations are interconnected by the Koyasan Choishi-michi Pilgrimage Route, which has been walked by devotees for centuries.
Today, Mount Koya remains a thriving religious hub, with 117 temples preserving its 1,200-year legacy. The area is not just a spiritual center but also a cultural landscape, where rugged mountain peaks and ancient forests intertwine with the deep traditions of Buddhist faith.
