Kyoto: Golden Pavilion, Nijo Castle & Ryoanji Temple Tour
W006
You will visit three fascinating sites located in the northern part of Kyoto City.
Each of the three unique facilities will be visited: the most beautiful building from the Muromachi period, a castle built by the shogun in the Edo period to guard the emperor, and a Zen Buddhist garden from the early Edo period.
HIGHLIGHT
We will gather at the Ozora Plaza on the rooftop of the Kyoto Station Building and tour the following three locations.
(1) Nijo Castle: This was the castle where the Tokugawa shoguns stayed in Kyoto. Located near the Imperial Palace where the emperor resided, visitors can see the Ninomaru Palace, the garden, and the Karamon Gate, all of which are national treasures. The castle is divided by pillars and fusuma sliding doors, and is decorated with beautiful paintings on the walls. Visitors can also learn about the lives of the shoguns, feudal lords, and other samurai, as well as the political order.
(2) Kinkakuji Temple: Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the "Golden Pavilion" by scholars from around the world, because of its gold-leaf-covered Shariden (a small hall for the nobility). The Kinkakuji Temple is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
(3) Ryoan-ji Temple: This is one of the most famous Zen gardens in Japan. The garden represents themes such as "know thyself" and control of excessive desires. This garden is a karesansui (dry landscape garden) in which the spirit of Zen is concentrated with 15 natural stones on a bed of white sand. The stone garden is famous worldwide as the "Zen Garden," having been visited and praised by the philosopher Sartre and Queen Elizabeth II.
