Kyoto: Arashiyama & Bamboo Forest Tour
W005
The Arashiyama area located in the west of Kyoto is an area of rich nature, beautiful gardens and quiet temples. This tour will visit a Zen Buddhist temple and a mysterious bamboo grove, in addition to the Hozu River and the Watarigatsu Bridge, which was known as a place for aristocrats to enjoy boating in the past.
HIGHLIGHT
We will gather at the open-air plaza on the rooftop of Kyoto Station Building and tour the following three locations.
Watarigetsukyo Bridge is a 155-meter-long bridge over the Oigawa River, and its parapet is made of hinoki cypress. It is very popular because it offers a panoramic view of the mountains and valley with cherry blossoms in spring and maple trees in autumn.
Tenryu-ji Temple: Registered as a World Heritage site, Tenryu-ji Temple means "dragon ascending to heaven," and there is a large ceiling painting depicting this scene in the form of a cloud dragon. In the 14th century, the shogunate designated the top five temples as Gozan (five mountains) according to a rating system, and Tenryu-ji Temple is the first of these five temples. The garden at Tenryu-ji was designed by Muso Kokushi, and is one of the most famous Zen gardens in Japan.
Bamboo Forest Trail: The bamboo grove stretches for 400 meters and has a mysterious beauty. You may want to enjoy the quiet atmosphere in the morning.
If you have time, you can enjoy matcha green tea at Okochi Sanso and take in the beautiful view of the valley and the city of Kyoto at Kameyama Park Observation Deck.
