WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
1 Kotohiragu Shrine
Located on the slopes of Mt. Kotohira (Zozu-san), Kotohiragu Shrine is the main shrine of all Konpira shrines in Japan, dedicated to Ōmononushi no Kami, the "God of the Sea," who has been worshipped for centuries. The famous approach to the main shrine consists of 785 stone steps, and to reach the okusha (inner shrine), visitors must climb 1,368 steps.
Along the way, there are important cultural properties, shrines that house works of art, and beautiful retro-style cityscapes. Every year, about 3 million people visit the Konpira Shrine for "Konpira-mairi" (pilgrimage).
2 Inokuma Genichiro Museum of Contemporary Art
This museum displays about 20,000 works by world-renowned artist Genichiro Inokuma, a native of Marugame.
He is famous for designing the wrapping paper for Mitsukoshi's "Hana Hiraku" line. The architecture of the museum was designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, one of Japan's most prominent architects, whom Inokuma trusted, having known him since childhood.
3 Marugame Castle
Marugame Castle, which celebrates over 400 years of history, is a symbol of the city. It is one of the remaining "twelve wooden castles" in Japan.
The stone walls leading from the inner moat to the keep are famous for their "fan-shaped slope," which creates a unique and beautiful curve. The three-story wooden keep made of white plaster is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
4 Chichibugahama Beach
In 2018, Chichibugahama Beach was ranked number one in Japan for "best sunset views" by the travel website Jalan.
Once littered with debris from the Seto Inland Sea, the beach was saved by local residents who began cleaning the shoreline as a form of "silent resistance" to a large-scale reclamation project planned for industrial development.
Their efforts were supported by the community, including local fishermen, and the reclamation project was eventually canceled. Today, the beach is a beautiful and peaceful place.
5 Zentsuji (Alternative in case of bad weather)
Zentsuji is the birthplace of Kōbō Daishi Kukai, the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. It is one of the most important temples among the 88 temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage.
Many places and traditions associated with Kōbō Daishi remain in the temple, attracting many visitors.
The temple's main hall, the Hōjō, was built on the site of the Saeki family residence where Kōbō Daishi was born.
In addition, the East Temple (Tōin) contains a massive camphor tree that is said to have flourished since Kōbō Daishi's birth over 1,200 years ago.
