WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
1 Ritsurin Garden
Designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government, Ritsurin Garden is the largest cultural garden in Japan.
Originally built as a private villa for the Matsudaira family, feudal lords of Takamatsu, the garden was completed nearly 300 years ago after several generations of renovations. With six ponds and thirteen artificial hills, it features an exquisite design characteristic of early Edo-period strolling gardens.
The layout of the garden, the arrangement of stones, and the harmony of trees and rocks provide a refined aesthetic.
The beauty of the garden changes with the seasons, and the flowers that bloom next to the carefully pruned pines create picturesque scenes.
2 Bonsai in Kinashi area
Takamatsu is considered a sacred place for bonsai enthusiasts, especially the areas of "Kinashi" and "Kokubunji".
Kinashi area, in particular, is known as the world's center of pine bonsai cultivation, accounting for 80% of Japan's production.
Revered by bonsai lovers, Kinashi is considered a must-see destination. Our guide offers a comprehensive tour of the local bonsai culture.
3 Negoroji Temple
Negoroji Temple is the 82nd temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage and is historically associated with Kōbō Daishi.
It is believed that during his pilgrimage, Kōbō Daishi built a temple called Kōzō-in on the main summit of Goshikidai, known as Aofune. Later, Chishō Daishi (a prominent monk of the Tendai sect) carved a statue of Senju Kannon from a sacred tree and founded Chikusō-in, which together with Kōzō-in is known as Negoroji Temple.
4 Seto Inland Sea Folk History Museum
The Seto Inland Sea History and Folk Museum, located in Kamezu Town, Takamatsu, is designated as an important cultural property.
This public facility, designed by local government officials rather than a famous architect, was completed in 1973. It is one of the newest designated cultural properties in Japan.
The museum showcases the maritime history of the Seto Inland Sea, which served as an important hub for Japanese maritime transportation, especially during the Edo period, when water transportation played a vital role in the movement of goods and people.
5 Busshōzan Onsen
Busshōzan Onsen features a stylish yet warm architectural design. All baths offer naturally flowing bicarbonate spring water, providing a relaxing and rejuvenating experience in an open, spacious setting.
The Onsen also has a café where visitors can enjoy food and drinks while soaking up the tranquil atmosphere.
