Kita-Kamakura, a course visiting Zen temples, run-down temples, and gardens
E007
Kamakura is a city rich in history, where Japan's first samurai-created government was located.
The samurai followed their own religion in opposition to the ancient aristocrats who ruled the country at that time. That is Zen Buddhism.
In this area of North Kamakura, there are representative Zen temples called Kamakura Gozan, where architecture and gardens are in perfect harmony, creating an atmosphere rich in spirituality.
June ushers in hydrangea season, and Meigetsuin Temple offers one of the most enchanting views in bloom.
HIGHLIGHT
【Itinerary】 Kitakamakura Station → Engakuji Temple → Meigetsuin Temple → Tokeiji Temple → Kitakamakura Station
(1) Engakuji Temple
Engakuji Temple is the second largest Zen temple in the Kamakura Gozan. The temple buildings are arranged in a straight line from the main gate to the innermost temple, and the large bell is a national treasure. The view of the temple grounds from the elevated Ryuguin-an is magnificent, and there is also a beautiful hojo garden.
(2) Meigetsuin Temple
Meigetsuin Temple is known as a temple of flowers. The garden of Karesansui (dry landscape garden) can be seen through the round window of the main hall. The temple is decorated with ikebana throughout the temple grounds and is a beautiful place where you can feel the meticulous beauty of Japan.
(3) Tokei Temple
In the Edo period (1603-1867), women were not allowed to divorce, but Tokeiji Temple was a nun temple where women were allowed to divorce if they rushed to the temple by the shogunate. In the cemetery on the temple grounds is the tomb of D. T. Suzuki, author of the famous book "Zen and Japanese Culture," which introduced Japanese religion and culture to Western countries.
