Kanazawa Street Course to Visit Zen Temples, Gardens and Tea Ceremony Sites
E005
The ancient capital of Kamakura is one of the most beautiful cities in Japan, surrounded by small hills and long sandy beaches. It is also a city where traditional cultures such as Zen and tea ceremony are in harmony with new cultures such as fashionable cafes and confectionery.
The beautiful cityscape, which has been protected by the National Trust and other organizations, is an attractive feature of the city.
HIGHLIGHT
【Itinerary】 Kamakura Station East Exit → Hokokuji Temple → Jomyoji Temple → Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine → Kamakura Station
(1) Hokokuji Temple
Known as "Bamboo Temple," Houkokuji Temple's main attraction is its garden, which was a favorite of director Steven Spielberg, with approximately 2,000 bamboos growing high toward the sky and sunlight streaming through the cracks. The quiet murmur of the stream and the occasional rustling of leaves in the wind add to the tranquility of the garden.
(2) Jomyouji Temple
Jomyouji Temple is the fifth largest Zen temple in the Kamakura Gozan (Five Mountains). There is a teahouse called Kisen-an, where you can relax and enjoy green tea while admiring the dry landscape garden with its exquisite arrangement of garden stones and well-kept groves of trees.
(3) Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
Founded by the Kamakura Shogunate and respected by the Tokugawa Shogunate, this grand shrine is a central institution of the Samurai spirit. With 60 broad stone steps leading up to a towering main hall, donated by the Shogun, it is the place where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kamakura City.
