The highest rank is the samurai, the ruling class. The idea was introduced by Inazo Nitobe, whose famous book Bushido impressed US President Theodore Roosevelt. Samurai have high ethical standards such as righteousness, benevolence, courtesy, and loyalty, and their greatest mission is to be loyal to their superior, the daimyo.
